Dear readers, visitors and those merely passing through;
I received the following in my email and I hereby demand that further tongue-in-cheek "White House Press Release" notices and emails include a disclaimer. The shock factor of the follwing message did indeed have its desired response. Upon first reading the statement, I immediately went looking for the links and found none other than a blogger already blogging about it. I do believe that this blogger was the first to publish the statement because the search revealed this one first and about an hour later a few more. So, without further ado:
The White House issued the following statement today
President Obama, acting to fulfill his pledge to remove the stain of Guantanamo Bay from the fabric of American life, has signed an Executive Order today that will close the prison facility, effective February 1, 2009. In a statement read at the signing, the President said, "Today I am a moving swiftly to expunge a great wrong perpetrated in America's name by my successor. The Guantanamo Bay detention center will be shut down on February 1st, 2009 and the detainees will be moved to appropriate facilities within the United States. Thanks to the help and enthusiastic support of Speaker Pelosi, who represents San Francisco, arrangements have been made to place most of Guantanamo's population in halfway houses near the Castro district and Pacific Heights. With this tragic episode behind us, we now begin the process of healing our country, and the men Bush and Cheney wrongly confined, humiliated and tortured. We are certain the former detainees will be welcomed by their new communities and that their justifiable Islamic rage and seething hatred will dissipate in the atmosphere of freedom, warmth and acceptance only the Bay Area can provide."
The problem with the notice is this. It is entirely believable. I also believe that this email running around will be the #1 classic Urban Legend in the years to come.
The real news is here:
The audio of the EOs being signed is located here if the player below does not work for you.
The audio of the Press Secretary Robert Gibbs discussing the EOs is located here if the player below does not work for you.
It is clear that the email sent does not reflect that which was spoken at all but represents what can be considered as inferred. I have no doubt that Pelosi would leap at the chance just like Murtha took the plunge yesterday. However, the email is a sarcastic scare piece.
AHA! I received an email from LTC Gordon Cucullu:
Naw, Mark, it's a spoof.
Would be a certain sense of shadenfreude in locating them next door to NP, but ain't gonna happen.
Last week BHO said that it would take a year to work things out. Later said he hoped that Guantanamo would be resolved 'before my first term.'
We've got some breathing space!
Confirmation of an internet spoof.
