New York Times: U.S. Charges Suspect, Eyeing Link to Qaeda in Yemen

Sounds lke Obama is going to press for more tax dollars going into another unconstitutional jobs bid.

WASHINGTON — Federal authorities on Saturday charged a 23-year-old Nigerian man with trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day, and officials said the suspect told them he had obtained explosive chemicals and a syringe that were sewn into his underwear from a bomb expert in Yemen associated with Al Qaeda. U.S. Rep. John Murtha told reporters Tuesday that he isn’t convinced al-Qaida is still a threat to national security.

Murtha said he visited Kuwait and Afghanistan during Thanksgiving and approves of the military’s strategy, but expressed a need to measure progress in Afghanistan.

“I don’t agree there is a threat to national security,” Murtha said, while not ruling out the possibility that he could be wrong about al-Qaida’s influence. “They keep saying they’ve defeated al-Qaida.”

WOW!  I just caught this one over at American Thinker: Terrorism? What terrorism, asks mediia?  So, here we have the Obamedia playing all of this down while the Jihadi scum bag is being held on terrorism charges.  Isn't that quite swell?

Two things leapt to mind as I read the opening: 1) Just why is it important that the White House called it terrorism? Is the subtext that President Obama is somehow "tough" on terrorism? Would it matter if the reporter's Aunt Mame defined it for us? Isn't any reader with a sixth-grade education, the target reading level of American newspapers, able to figure that out for him/herself? But now we know what to think, because Obama told us so. 2) It's an "attempted" act of terrorism. No terrorism here, folks. Yes, "several of the 278 passengers receiv[ed] minor injuries," and there will no doubt be counseling for post-traumatic stress disorder. But maybe just the knowledge that it was simply "attempted" terrorism will be comfort enough to all those aboard Flight 253. [...]

Revisiting the 'Terrorist Threat Debate'

I'm thinking about the circumstances surrounding the attack on Northwest Flight 253. I always do whenever there's another terrorist attack. I'm especially intrigued -- no bothered, actually -- by the response of the leftists. I've commented already on folks like Spencer Ackerman and Matthew Yglesias, inveterate America-bashers, so no need to rehash it. No, my sense is that even level-headed folks fail to appreciate the transformation in circumstances of American and international life since September 11, 2001 -- a transformation that had been building for sometime, as in the nature of global conflict and the increasingly catastrophic incidence of attacks on citizens of the United States and elsewhere. We don't think too often about this, since the possibility of personal danger seems so far removed for most people -- but also because it's been almost ten years since the attacks on New York and Washington. Time heals all wounds, so in that sense our healing has also made us increasingly impervious to the continuing threat of diabolical terrorism. [...]

[...] Airports in Nigeria do not typically conduct tests for explosive residue on passengers' carry-on baggage and shoes. However, a spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria said the airport in Lagos had cleared a US Transportation Security Administration audit in November.

A federal “situational awareness” bulletin stated. “The subject is claiming to have extremist affiliation and that the device was acquired in Yemen along with instructions as to when it should be used.”

President Barack Obama was notified of the incident and discussed it with security officials, the White House said. It said he is monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates from his vacation spot in Hawaii.

The suspect was on an intelligence database but was not on the government’s no-fly list, meaning he was known to authorities but not considered a high risk. According to US intelligence officials, the explosive device was a mixture of powder and liquid.

Peter T. King of New York, the senior Republican on the House Homeland Security Committee, who was briefed on the incident, said: “This was the real deal. This could have been devastating.”

The Yemen link could be significant. It was reported on Christmas Eve that Yemen warplanes were believed to have killed two al-Qaeda leaders and a Muslim extremist religious leader connected with the US Army officer, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, accused of killing Army personnel in Fort Hood, Texas last month.

The Yemen strike at 4.30 am, local time, had targeted a meeting of senior al-Qaeda operatives, 400 miles southeast of the capital, Sana’a. Al-Qaeda has used bases in Yemen to strike Western targets inside the country as well as mount cross-border attacks on targets in Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil exporter. [...]
