Leader of This Band

Many years ago when I was either in Junior High or High School I submitted hundreds of songs and ballads for competitions and, naturally, financial concerns.  I had written a song for my father, My Dad, a few years after my brother was KIA in SE Asia.  Soon after I submitted the song, Leader of This Band, dedicated to my Dad, Dan Fogelberg came out with this song.  And, no, I claim no rights to it because when I submitted the song for review and was selected as a cash prize winner, I surrendered all ownership and rights.  Yeah, I was just a punk kid and didn’t know any better but, that’s life.

Dan Fogelberg evidenty rewrote it but maintained the sentiment and more than likely applied it to his Dad but, that is all subjective thinking on my part.

My copy of the verbiage I wrote is in a box someplace more than likely in the attic.  One day I’ll go find it and post my version.  Anyway, Happy Father’s Day to all the Fathers.

Fan tribute to a Great Artist and Song
Personal Note: This video is dedicated to my good friend who lost his father yesterday, and another close friend who also recently lost her father. To all the good men who have been a father and Leader to their children. And to my own Father to whom I owe everything. Peace.

Just about everything Dan Fogelberg performed, I liked.  I hope I never discover his politics.

An only child
Alone and wild
A cabinet maker’s son
His hands were meant
For different work
And his heart was known
To none —
He left his home
And went his lone
And solitary way
And he gave to me
A gift I know I never
Can repay

A quiet man of music
Denied a simpler fate
He tried to be a soldier once
But his music wouldn’t wait
He earned his love
Through discipline
A thundering, velvet hand
His gentle means of sculpting souls
Took me years to understand.

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul —
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I’m just a living legacy
To the leader of the band.

My brothers’ lives were
For they heard another call
One went to chicago
And the other to st. paul
And I’m in colorado
When I’m not in some hotel
Living out this life I’ve chose
And come to know so well.

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go —
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, pap, I don’t think i
Said ‘i love you’ near enough —

The leader of the band is tired
And his eyes are growing old
But his blood runs through
My instrument
And his song is in my soul —
My life has been a poor attempt
To imitate the man
I’m just a living legacy
To the leader of the band
I am the living legacy
To the leader of the band.

Are you saying Dan stole your song?! I dont think so!! Dan's dad was a true band leader, his profession and Dan wrote Leader of the Band as a tribute to his dad...While the sentiment of your song and Dan's song may have been the same, were the words, the music?! I get rather testy when someone takes credit for something that cant be proven--Dan is no longer with us and besides he was a brilliant songwriter!!! Insinuating that your song was written first and that you gave up ownership of it and that "somehow" you think Dan copied is ludricrous at best!!!! Poppycock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ditto the first post! You shoulda had the back-up to prove it! WTF???

June 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterValarie

No. I didn't say that at all. I said I wrote a song with similar sentiments and I won a competition and the get the $$$$ award, I had to surrender ownership. About 2 years later this song came out but the verbiage is by no means exactly as I wrote it. This songs BELONGS to Dan Fogelberg and I make no claim to it.

Do you have a brother in Chicago, and one in St. Paul?

June 22, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterJoey

No. I had a brother KIA in Vietnam. Read the article. My verbiage was very similar and the Dan Fogelberg version, in my estimation was much better. I was just a kid when I wrote my version. I love this song and always will. Dan was a GREAT performer and musician.

It's not uncommon for professional singer/songwriters to use, borrow, steal other non-professionals work. Whether it's words, music, song title, or the entire piece, it's happened and will continue to happen.

Did Fogelberg take your song or use it as inspiration to write his own? Who knows.

Whatever the case it is a great song.

Seeing that I didn't own the song after I received the cash award and Dan rewrote it, It really doesn't matter. The fact remains that is in fact a GREAT song.

How dare you claim that you wrote a song similar to Dan's it sounds to me like he stole your work... I do not believe that for one minute... If he were here he may have something to say on that... What you wrote here is an INSULT... SHame on you...

June 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPamela Parrish

I wanted to add.. If you had a problem with it years ago.. Why complain years later???? the man is dead and you claim that he re wrote a song... You are a low down asshole... I think you are disgusting... If you really did write that song PROVE it... if you don't I suggest you shut the fuck up before I forward this on to his wife at the living legecy newletter... Lord knows she does not need some creep posting TRASH about one of his classic songs being owned by someone else...

You are a gold digger and nothing more then a big piece of slime... Go to hell as you have no respect for the dead...

June 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPamela Parrish

O lord take a chill pill Pamela before you stroke out. People like you make me truly wonder about the human race.

Like I stated above it is NOT uncommon for professional singers/songwriters to take others work. It's happened many times in the past and will likely continue.

June 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDean

Why are you talking trash now that Dan is gone? You had over 20 years, these kind of lawsuits have been around 20 plus years. Itsead of telling Pam to take a chill pill, why don't you go back on your meds.

THANKS for the backup... It is people like him that drag the human race down... He can't face the fact that he is a piece of shit that is wanting money even though he won't admit it... Anyway... If you have proof that you wrote the song then I will chill... Otherwise you will be in some trouble... I hope that jean finds out about you... I am not the only ont that thinks that you are a creep....

June 23, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPamela Parrish

Who's talking trash? Seems to me you jerk offs come in here making unfounded allegations calling Mark and now my self names and then you stupidly claim I'm talking trash?

I happen to know Mark unlike you twits. Yet all you can do is claim how high and mighty you are and how Dan could never do such a thing.

How well did you know Dan? Were you intimate with him sharing every little aspect of his life? I seriously doubt you know anything about him other than his music. You certainly misread this entire post jumping to conclusions and reading into this something that isn't there.

Your childish rants make me sick. You assholes are just typical of what goes around the web these days masquerading as intelligent human beings when in fact you're nothing more than wannabe shit for brains.

I'm done with you scum. Two words...Fuck off.

June 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDean

Oh and Pamela. Wherein did Mark state he wanted money??? WHERE?? Where did he say he feels he should be paid for what he wrote? Point it out to me.

Go sit on a short stick and take your idiotic threats with you moron.

June 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDean

I am a moron and Proud of it buddy! Saying that he re wrote the song for his dad is just bullshit.... You can't even admit that you want money.. Otherwise why in the hell would you put it on a blog for all to see... You gave up the rights so that is your loss... So Your statute has ran out should you want to file a case... So take youe stick and shove it... You put stuff like this on a blog and you WILL generate some heat... I hope Jean finds out what you wrote here...

If you have proof then show it... That is all we ask... So maybe you need to put up if not then you are the one that needs to fuck off....

June 24, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterPamela Parrish

Wow Mark! Not since my lasy stroll through Daily Kos and HuffPo have I seen such shining examples of the intellectual prowess of mental midgets. Amazing how this went from a tribute to fathers to a genuine ankle biters fest isn't it?

I am no longer surprised that this country continues to elect Democrats and idiots like Barak Hussein.

Looks like a day at the zoo here. Perhaps we should charge admission fees.

And yes Pamela, I get the last word. Mark may have his own comments to add when he returns but for now comments are off.
Perhaps I was much too generous referring to you as a moron. You are clearly beneath contempt and an insult to morons.
Oh, about that short stick? Don't get slivers honey and uh you aren't my buddy.
