The wait might soon be over for the official start of the 2012 Republican nomination fight.
Indiana Rep. Mike Pence's decision not to run for president places the focus now on three Republicans - former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty and South Dakota Sen. John Thune - who may decide their plans as early as February, finally engaging a nomination fight that has thus far seen all the major combatants waiting cautiously in their corners.
Gingrich, Pawlenty and Thune have all suggested they could make up their minds in the next month, which puts them on a different timetable than the other high-profile GOP prospects who have indicated their decisions won't come until spring. If any one of them becomes the first major Republican candidate, it would provide a jolt of energy to a presidential campaign that looked to be in hibernation until April [...]
